The Academy's Council has recently endorsed a new and revised set of Guidance notes for those making nominations for Academician status.
The Nominations Committee has been concerned for some time that the guidance notes were not sufficiently clear so that nominations were being received in forms that were not helpful to its work. This has resulted in greater numbers of nominations being referred back to the proposer or proposing learned society for more or clearer information. As a result, the Committee decided to revise the guidance notes, expanding them to make its requirements and needs much clearer.
During the process, it was agreed to remove the annual limit on the number of nominations that individual Academicians may make, as this was felt to be unhelpful, and also to permit seconders to belong to the same institution as the nominee, again in order to facilitate applications.
The new guidance notes, called 'Making Nominations', are being printed into a hardcopy booklet which will be distributed in January to all Academicians and member learned societies, but can already be downloaded as a pdf document here or from the bottom of the Home page of the Academy website. These guidance notes will apply to the summer 2012 round of nominations onwards.
People making nominations are urged to download and use the latest versions of the forms for each nominations round. These are also available from the Home page, as well as the Nominations page in the Members' Area and the Membership page under About Us.
The Nominations Committee will meet in January to consider the cases submitted for the winter round; their recommendations will be considered by Council at its February meeting and proposers and new Academicians (plus their Vice Chancellors, where appropriate) will be notified during March 2012.The closing date for receipt of nominations for the summer 2012 round will be Friday 15 June.
