AGM and Annual Lecture 2008

The 2008 AGM and Annual Lecture took place on Wednesday 25 June 2008 at The Jeffery Hall, Institute of Education Way, London.Professor Miriam David delivered the Chair's report, which incorporated a report from Stephen Anderson, the new Executive Director, who was unfortunately unable to be present. She reflected on the events of the past year, welcomed 60 new Academicians by name and looked forward to an exciting new era with the launch the following day of the report from the joint Academy and ESRC project into knowledge transfer and public engagement activities in the learned societies. Lord Bhikhu Parekh stepped down as president of the Academy, which now welcomes Sir Howard Newby as its new President. Michael Jacobs retired after a two year stint as an enormously hard working Honorary Secretary and Professor Peter Fearon was welcomed as his worthy successor.

Following the AGM, Professor John Urry chaired the Annual Lecture. Professor Paul Wiles CB CSA, Chief Scientific Advisor to the Home Office and Chair of the Government Social Research Heads of Profession Group spoke on "Can Social Science Drive Public Policy or Debate? In particular he noted a worrying decline in public confidence in social science and a need for stronger social science lobbying bodies in this country as well as greater input from research.
