Leaving a Legacy to the Academy

The Academy of Social Sciences is the national academy of academics, learned societies and practitioners in the social sciences. Our mission is to promote social science in the United Kingdom for the public benefit.

We are wholly dependent on our members and supporters to pursue this work as we receive no public funding.

Would you please consider favouring the Academy with a Gift in your Will?

This will be placed in a restricted Endowment Fund, to be used solely for the purpose of promoting the usefulness of social science insights and evidence to addressing societal challenges of the day.

In this way, you will be able to give something back to the disciplines which have formed the basis of your career to the benefit of future generations.

How to leave a gift

You can leave a gift by either:

Including a clause in your will: When writing your will you can outline a gift including the name, address and charity number of the organisation you would like to benefit, and the type of gift you would like to leave.

Completing a Codicil form: A codicil adds the details of a gift to your existing will. This can be done at any time and becomes a legal document when signed in the presence of two witnesses, outside of your family.

We recommend always consulting a solicitor when writing or making any changes to your will.

Types of gifts you can leave

There are several types you can leave, depending on your personal circumstances and preferences.

Residuary: This is a gift of a percentage, or the whole, of an estate following the distribution of specific gifts and payment of any debts and expenses.

Pecuniary: This is a financial gift of money or shares.

Reversionary: This is a gift of an asset, such as a house or fund, which can be enjoyed by a chosen beneficiary during his or her lifetime before reverting to the Academy.

Inheritance tax

Inheritance Tax is currently charged at 40% of the value of your estate above the basic threshold, which depends on your circumstances. For many this threshold is £325,000.

There are a number of ways in which you can help to minimise the Inheritance Tax liability on your estate, including leaving gifts to charities.

The Academy of Social Sciences is a registered charity; as a result any gift to the Academy is tax free, and may reduce the tax burden on your estate.
