Roger Goodman, Chair of the Academy of Social Sciences, has today welcomed the election of Norman Lamb MP as the new chair of the House of Commons Science and Technology Committee.
Commenting, he said:
“The Academy of Social Sciences and its Campaign for Social Science are delighted to welcome Norman Lamb to his new role as chair of the House of Commons Science and Technology Committee. As a long-standing champion of evidence-based policymaking, Mr Lamb will be a huge asset to the committee, and we have enjoyed working with him in the past on issues such as the importance of social science research in improving dementia care.
“The committee plays a crucial role in ensuring a rigorous evidence-base is at the heart of policymaking, informed by world-leading UK science and innovation in powering our economy and preparing for the opportunities of the future.
“We look forward to continuing to support Mr Lamb and the entire committee in deploying social science expertise to understand our changing world and find innovative solutions to our most pressing challenges, from channelling big data, to fighting disease and driving the government’s Industrial Strategy.
“We are grateful to Stephen Metcalfe, a steadfast allay of the social science and research communities, for his leadership during his time as chair, and wish him every success in the future.”
