Academy members vote to combine roles of President and Chair of Council

November 22, 2018

(L-R) Jane Broadbent, Honorary Secretary, Sir Ivor Crewe, President, Roger Goodman, Chair of Council and Stephen Anderson, Executive Director.

The Academy’s Fellows and member Learned Societies have voted overwhelmingly to combine the Academy’s two most senior honorary roles – that of President and Chair of Council – into a single role of President.

The results were announced at an Extraordinary General Meeting in London on Thursday 22nd November 2018.

Fellows and member Learned Societies were invited to vote on two resolutions:

Resolution a:

To combine the roles of President (as detailed in Article 53 of the Articles of Association) and the Chair of Council (as detailed in Article 54) into one role of President.

The results were:

257 Fellows voted of which:

  • 252 voted for the resolution (98%)
  • 5 voted against (2%)
  • No votes were withheld (0%)

20 Learned Societies voted of which:

  • 20 voted for the resolution (100%)
  • None voted against (0%)
  • No votes were withheld (0%)

Resolution b:

To replace Articles 53 and 54 with new Article 53A detailing the combined role of the President. This includes chairing the meetings of Council and of the Chief Executives and Chief Officers of member Learned Societies; overseeing the proceedings of the Annual General Meeting and Annual Lunch; representing the Academy at ceremonial occasions and at external meetings and events; managing relationships with key stakeholders; and appointing the Executive Director of the Academy, subject to approval by Council.

The results were:

254 Fellows voted of which:

  • 247 voted for the resolution (97%)
  • 5 voted against (2%)
  • 2 votes were withheld (1%)

20 Learned Societies voted of which:

  • 20 voted for the resolution (100%)
  • None voted against (0%)
  • No votes were withheld (0%)

Both resolutions were therefore passed, having secured a majority of at least 75% in both voting constituencies – Fellows and Learned Societies.

Transitional arrangements will now be put in place while the current President and Chair of Council complete their terms of office. Once Sir Ivor Crewe’s term as President ends in December 2019, the current Chair, Roger Goodman, will take on the single President’s role for 18 months until his term ends in June 2021. After that, a new President will be appointed. The Academy will look to appoint a number of Vice Presidents in due course.
