BAM LLD SIG Event – “Could we…Should we?: Aligning and sharing leadership research between academic and managerial communities”

Leadership academics are often told that they should improve the impact of their work, without necessarily receiving much guidance on how to achieve this aim. Management and development organisations carry out their own leadership research, to meet the needs of their audience; mostly without regard to the work being done in an academic environment. In both contexts, research aims to understand leadership, followership and the impact of a range of strategies for improving workplace outcomes.
We are delighted to present this event in collaboration with CMI and CIPD. The aim is to bring together researchers and practitioners from academic and management contexts. We will outline the latest research being conducted in both environments and discuss how closer ties between the two worlds could be achieved.

The benefits of such an event include increasing awareness of the types and foci of research in both communities, to look for synergies in research streams and then to find ways of collaborating that potentially pool resources and build bridges between academia and ‘the real world’. We hope that participants will influence this discussion and the directions in which research could travel in the field of leadership and leadership development.


This event will take place on 9th January 2018.  12-1pm Lunch, poster presentations and networking, Event: 1-5pm


Who Should Attend

This event is aimed at researchers who are interested in how academic and management research interests can be aligned and who may be looking for opportunities to find research partners across the two communities.

This includes:

  • Members of BAM (including doctoral students) interested in the application of leadership and leadership development research
  • Managers looking for sources of research and ways to benefit from both streams of investigation
  • Other members of CMI and CIPD

Paper Submission Details

Posters on current research are welcomed from academics and doctoral students. Please provide a 200 word abstract to describe your work and how it relates to the topic of this event. References, diagrams and tables will not be included in the word count.

The event will take place at the Work Foundation in Central London where we can accommodate up to 60 delegates.
