HEFCE is seeking to commission two pieces of research to explore the interdisciplinary research (IDR) landscape in higher education.
Case study review of English interdisciplinary research in higher education
The study will consider examples of new and established institutional investments in IDR. It will seek to understand where activities have been effective, and consider where work did not have the intended effect and lessons learned from less successful initiatives.

Qualitative review of the UK’s interdisciplinary research
This study will examine the drivers for success and failure in interdisciplinary research. Researchers are asked to apply a range of methods including in-depth interviews and quantitative surveying of stakeholders. The sample of stakeholders must be broadly representative of higher education institutions, researchers, disciplines and funders across the UK. The primary output will be a written report to the funders containing a clear assessment of the current IDR landscape in the UK, which will be published.
