Open call: Academy seeks Fellow Search Committee Chair
22 July 2020
Would you like to help the Academy select the most deserving candidates for fellowship and thereby support its charitable objective to promote social science in the UK for public benefit?
We’re seeking a Chair of our Academic Fellow Search Committee to co-ordinate nominations of leading academics from across the full spectrum of the social sciences who meet the Academy’s criteria for fellowship.
The Academy has two nominations rounds each year and nominations can be made by individual Fellows, by member learned societies and by the Academy’s academic and practitioner search committees. Nominations are considered by the Academy’s Nominations Committee and then by the full Council.
The Chair of the Academic Fellow Search Committee must be a Fellow of the Academy and a recognised leader in an academic community. An ability to demonstrate a broad understanding of social sciences and what constitutes academic eminence and impact beyond academia is essential.
This is a hands-on ‘doing’ role. The Search Committee Chair will be prepared to review and write nominations and co-ordinate the submission of nominations from committee members.
The committee meets twice a year, usually virtually, but with the option to meet physically, if required.
The appointment initially runs for three years, subject to review after the first year, and with the potential to renew for another three years. The position is unremunerated but travel expenses are paid.
How to apply
As part of the application process you will be asked to send an email setting out your relevant experience and what you’d hope to bring to the role. Appointments are made by Council on the recommendation of the Executive Committee.
If you are interested in applying for the role and would like to learn more, please contact Kate Atkins, Chief Secretary at [email protected]
Applications close on Monday 31 August 2020. The appointment commences in mid-September.
