John Benyon FAcSS

The Academy is greatly saddened to hear of the untimely death on 19th May 2016 of Fellow and former Council member Professor John BJohn Benyon and Cary Cooperenyon FAcSS after a short battle against the cancer mesothelioma.

John was the founder of the University of Leicester’s Department of Criminology and its former Director of Lifelong Learning, He was also the Honorary Treasurer of the Political Studies Association for 23 years.

Stephen Anderson, Executive Director of the Academy of Social Sciences, said of him, “John was a big man with a big personality. He was an affable, sociable and good humoured Member of Council and Chair of the College of Learned Societies for six years, roles which he clearly cherished and upheld. He could turn an argument with his interventions. People listened to him and his influence was far reaching. He is remembered here with great affection.”

He will be greatly missed by all who knew him – for his sense of humour, his energetic and sincere promotion of social science and for his enjoyment of vigorous and rigorous debate.
