Society of Professional Economists joins the Academy of Social Sciences
10 December 2019
The Academy is pleased and proud to announce that the Society of Professional Economists (SPE) has now joined our Academy as a learned society. The SPE, formerly the Society of Business Economists, leads in serving the needs of professional practitioner economists in the UK and Europe. It does this by providing a diverse range of activities, a forum to debate questions of economics and interaction with key policymakers.
The Academy is composed of around 1400 individual Fellows, 44 Learned Societies, and a number of affiliates, together representing nearly 90,000 social scientists. Fellows are distinguished scholars and practitioners from academia and the public and private sectors. Most Learned Societies in the social sciences in the UK are represented within the Academy.
Dr Rita Gardner, Chief Executive of the Academy says, “The Academy of Social Sciences is delighted that SPE has joined as member, bringing its knowledge and expertise to enhance our learned society and professional body forum and adding to the collective network of over 90,000 social scientists represented in the memberships of the Academy and its Member organisations. Practicing economists are a vital part of the UK’s professional social science community and, in the Academy, our Fellows include professionals from a wide range of sectors. There are many synergies between the Academy and the SPE.”
The SPE is not a regulating body but is concerned with the continuous professional development of professional practitioner economists. For example, providing regular ‘Master Classes’ and practical training courses- see www.specourses.co.uk
The SPE Chairman is Kevin Daly FAcSS, the President is Sir Dave Ramsden, with Vice-Presidents Dame Kate Barker FAcSS, Professor Sir Charlie Bean and Sir John Vickers. The SPE Head of Professional Development is visiting Professor Andy Ross FAcSS. The main contact is Katie Abberton [email protected]
