28 January 2019
Stephen Anderson was awarded Fellowship of the Academy of Social Sciences at an event to mark his retirement as Executive Director.
He was presented with his Fellowship certificate by former President, Professor Sir Howard Newby FAcSS, former Chair, Professor Sir Cary Cooper FAcSS, and current Chair, Professor Roger Goodman FAcSS.
Stephen was nominated for Fellowship in recognition of his excellence in the promotion and dissemination of social science through his role as Executive Director of the Academy from 2008 until his retirement in January 2019. His nomination was approved by the Academy’s Nominations Committee and ratified by the full Council.
Professor Goodman said Stephen had transformed the Academy during his tenure. His achievements included growing the number of Fellows from 500 to nearly 1,400, focussing the Academy on its wider public purposes, and founding the Campaign for Social Science.
Council and committee members, Fellows and Learned Society representatives attended an event to mark Stephen’s retirement on 25th January 2019 at the University of Liverpool in London, where the Academy is based.
Stephen has been succeeded by Dr Rita Gardner CBE FAcSS, who has joined the Academy as Chief Executive.
